Go Modules — Dependency Management (Go 1.11, 2018)

Go · History & Evolution · Run with go run

Explanation

Go's original dependency model relied on `GOPATH` — all Go code lived in one workspace. This made versioning painful. Go 1.11 introduced Go Modules (`go.mod` / `go.sum`), a first-class, built-in dependency management system. Go 1.16 made modules the default.

Real-World Scenario

Before modules, sharing a library meant asking consumers to place it at the exact right path inside their `GOPATH`. With modules, `go get github.com/some/library@v1.2.3` pins a specific version cryptographically, making builds reproducible across machines.
